Volpone or The Fox Travel widely regarded as Britain's greatestOriginal National Theatre poster for the Ben Johnson comedy Volpone or The Fox, 1977. The design by Richard Bird and Michael Mayhew was adapted from an illuminated medieval manuscript and shows a fox with sharp teeth and snaking red tongue. The performance was directed by Peter Hall and starred Dennis Tynsley, Paul Scofield, Liam O'Callaghan, Stanley Lloyd, Ben Kingsley and John Gielgud.
